SAFETY TOPIC OF VMA DINNER MEETING – Thomas & Betts will be the
featured presenter at the upcoming dinner meeting of the Volusia

QUARTER ECONOMIC SUMMARY MAY 4 – Volusia County Economic
Development’s quarterly briefing on local economic indicators will be

SOUTHWEST
VOLUSIA BUSINESS SUMMIT MAY 11 – Congressman John Mica will host a
business summit focusing on Southwest Volusia County. The program will
bring together several experts including federal, state and private
sector financing resources to provide assistance to expand employment
opportunities. The summit is May 11 from 8 a.m. - 10 a.m. at Deltona
City Hall, 2345 Providence Blvd. There is no charge and reservations are

TOOL FOR CLEANTECH DEVELOPMENT -- The Florida Cleantech Acceleration
Network (FL CAN) program is a network of laboratory facilities that are
dedicated to clean technology development. Entrepreneurs, students,
scientists and established companies can gain access to the FL CAN lab
facilities to develop commercial products using Florida-based research.
Researchers within this network of laboratory facilities have expertise
in engineering, chemistry, energy research, building science, and energy

OFFERS FAMILY BUSINESS HELP -- According to the Family Business
Review, 80 - 90 percent of all U.S. companies are family businesses. It
also has been reported that over the next decade more than 40 percent of
executives at those companies will retire. Stetson University's Family
Enterprise Center (FEC) has been helping students, professionals and
family business owners since 1998 and offers a bachelor of business

SUPPLY CHAIN FORUM MAY 8 IN ORLANDO – The U.S. Department of
Transportation and the U.S. Department of Commerce will host a forum May
8 at the Orlando World Center to attract U.S. manufacturers for the next
generation of rail equipment. The forum will facilitate connections
between rail OEM manufacturers and traditional and nontraditional rail

BIG BUSINESS IN FLORIDA, VOLUSIA COUNTY – Forests are the major land
use in Volusia County comprising 65 percent of the 707,800 acres in the
county. Public land and forest industry companies account for 9 percent
each of the forests with the remaining 82 percent privately owned. The
value of the harvest exceeds $5 million annually, and the industry
provides more than 1,100 direct jobs with a payroll in excess of $21
million. There are over 150,000 forestry-related jobs in Florida with
payroll receipts exceeding $1.25 billion annually.
