BUY LOCAL EXPO
AT THE SPEEDWAY – The inaugural Buy Local Volusia Expo will be
Tuesday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Daytona International Speedway. The
event is sponsored by The Daytona Beach News-Journal, seven Volusia
chambers of commerce and Volusia County Economic Development. The expo
is a culmination of efforts to encourage people to buy from local
businesses. First promoted in 2009 by Volusia County Economic
Development and later joined by the Halifax Regional Chamber, the
concept of keeping our dollars locally has grown into this event. The
free expo will feature exhibits by more than 100 businesses and
providers of business services from throughout Volusia County. The event
also will feature seminars on a wide range of business topics, free food
samples from several area restaurants, door prizes, and an after-hours
business networking event. A fee will be charged for the business
after-hours networking event in the Sprint Fan Zone at 5 p.m. This event
is being sponsored by Americrown. For more information, call
386-255-0981 or go to:

DELAND CHAMBER
TO HONOR WOMEN IN BUSINESS – The DeLand Area Chamber of Commerce
will host an event to recognize local women who have made a significant
impact in the business community. The event will be December 14 at the
DeLand Business & Conference Center, 1301 International Speedway
Boulevard, DeLand. Jayne Fifer, president and chief executive officer of
the VMA, will be the keynote speaker. Tickets must be purchased in
advance. For reservations, call 386-734-4331.
COUNTY LANDFILL
TO BECOME EMBRY-RIDDLE ROCKET TEST SITE – The Volusia County Council
has approved a partnership with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
that allows the university to test small rocket motors at the county’s
massive landfill west of Daytona Beach. ERAU’s ultimate goal is to
launch a satellite into space. A remote area at the landfill will be
used for stationary testing. While no rockets will be launched at the
landfill, the testing of motors and propellants is expected to provide
needed test data. Detailed procedures have been developed to assure
public safety and environmental protection.
THOMPSON PUMP
NAMED EXPORTER OF THE YEAR – Thompson Pump has been named the
Exporter of the Year by the Volusia Manufacturers Association (VMA). The
award was presented to the Port Orange company at VMA’s annual awards
banquet December 8. Thompson Pump had a 59 percent increase in exports
from 2009 to 2010. Much of this growth has come from South American
projects including the widening of the Panama Canal. Thompson’s
penetration into this market involved training local representatives,
translating product literature and labeling into Spanish and having
Spanish speaking customer support representatives in Port Orange. The
award was presented and sponsored by Volusia County Economic
Development.
TAX BREAKS FOR
SMALL BUSINESS STOCK INVESTMENT EXTENDED – Investors who buy stock
in a regular corporation with assets of $50 million or less after
September 27, 2010, and before January 1, 2012, and hold it for more
than five years can exclude 100 percent of any gain when the stock is
sold, but there is a cap on the exclusion. The gain also is exempt from
the alternative minimum tax. The exclusion was set to lapse after 2010
but was revived. Stock of certain companies is not eligible for this tax
break so be sure to check with your financial advisor.
