INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY ISSUES BONDS – The Volusia County Industrial Development Authority finalized authorization of up to $5 million in industrial revenue bonds to Edgewater Power Boats, a manufacturer of recreational and commercial boats. The bonds will be used to finance the acquisition, renovation and expansion of new manufacturing space in the City of Edgewater. If your manufacturing company is considering an expansion of its existing facility, acquisition of new property or the purchase of new equipment and machinery, explore the less-than-prime rates available through Industrial Revenue Bond financing. To learn more, contact Phil Ehlinger, business assistance manager, at 386/248-8048.

HOMESTEAD PORTABILITY DEADLINE – March 1 is the deadline for homestead property owners eligible for the new portable homestead exemption to file applications with the Volusia County Property Appraiser. (Because March 1 is a Saturday, applications will be accepted through Monday, March 3.) The same deadline applies for new homestead applications. Residents who have changed their homestead or permanent residence since Jan.1, 2007 are eligible for portability.

RACE FANS ENJOY INCREASED AIR SERVICE – More than 3,000 travelers passed through security at the Daytona Beach International Airport Monday, Feb. 18, the day after the Daytona 500. The expanded service from the airport to new destinations kept the ticket counters busy at AirTran Airways, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines and US Airways. From DBIA, travelers can get to Atlanta and Charlotte for connecting flights, and can fly nonstop to New York (Newark and LaGuardia). Seasonal Saturday service to Cincinnati and Cleveland also is available from Daytona Beach.

SAVE THE DATE – The “4th Annual Business Express, Connections on the go...” summit will be from 7:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, hosted by the Center for Business Excellence (CBE). At the summit, the CBE will be showcasing Volusia and Flagler County employers that participated in an employer recognition program called “Exceptional Employers.” The program awards employers for excellence in organizational effectiveness and attracting, growing and retaining high-quality, productive employees. The event will be at the Daytona Beach Hilton. Look for more information on this event in an upcoming On the Economic Scene.

IS FRANCHISING RIGHT FOR YOU? – The Small Business Development Center at Daytona Beach College will conduct a three-hour workshop on franchises. The workshop will be at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 27 and reservations are required. For more information or to make a reservation, call 386/506-4723.

LOOK OVERSEAS FOR REAL ESTATE BUYERS – Politics and the weak dollar are helping to boost foreign interest in the Florida market. Florida is well-established among overseas buyers who bought more than 7 percent of all homes sold in Florida in 2006. Nationally, Florida accounted for 26 percent of all U.S. sales to international buyers in 2007. Latin buyers also are increasing due to politics and buyers looking to diversify and hedging their bets against economic uncertainty in their home country. The National Association of Realtors reports that 22 percent of the sales are condos and 28 percent are for cash, with a median price of $299,500.

A CRIMINAL CORPORATION? – The purpose of forming a corporation is to ultimately protect individuals, but that could now backfire. A single charge against a corporation (e.g. Enron) can result in potential criminal liability against officers, directors and employees who may be held liable for the acts of employees done in the “ordinary course of business” regardless of whether they knew or authorized these acts. Maximize Management Inc. of Ormond Beach publishes articles on corporate governance, including one by Daytona Beach’s Cobb & Cole regarding the “criminal corporation.” Go to http://www.maximizemgt.com to register and receive articles.
