VOLUSIA COUNTY EDUCATIONAL CONSORTIUM TO LEAD ANALYSIS OF ROAD CONCERNS – The Volusia County Council approved a series of contract awards totaling approximately $54,000 to the Volusia County Educational Consortium. The Consortium will study the current and future road and transportation needs countywide. It is comprised of the five major colleges and universities in Volusia County: Bethune-Cookman University, Daytona Beach Community College, University of Central Florida and Stetson University. Researchers from each of the colleges and universities submitted a series of investigative and analytical proposals designed to evaluate the community’s ability to construct and maintain future roadways and transportation systems in response to the area’s projected growth. The series of studies are scheduled to begin immediately and are due to be completed by early spring.

AVIATION PRODUCTS MANUFACTURER SEEKS NEW FACILITY – The Volusia County Department of Economic Development is in negotiations with a manufacturer seeking 50,000 square feet of production space. The company will be visiting the area soon to evaluate potential sites. If successful in locating a site, the company is hoping to relocate within the next 12 to 18 months. IRS RETURNING MONEY TO FLORIDIANS –The Internal Revenue Service provided tax refunds to a total of 6,727,142 Floridians in 2006. The total amount of the refunds was approximately $15.3 billion or $2,267 per taxpayer.

WORSHOP ON SECURITY IN THE GLOBAL MARKET SCHEDULED – The Halifax Area Trade Council (HATC) will be conducting a luncheon workshop featuring speakers Dr. Stephen Sloan and John Bersia from the University of Central Florida. Co-sponsored by Daytona Beach International Airport (DBIA), the workshop will focus on “Security in the Global Marketplace: The Terrorist Threat.” Plan on joining the HATC this Friday, October 12 beginning at 11:30 a.m. The luncheon will be in the Volusia Room in the main terminal of DBIA. FINANCIAL PODCAST AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD - Wachovia Corporation has launched its first podcast on its web site, www.wachovia.com. The pilot program provides listeners with commentary on a variety of economic events and their potential impact domestically and internationally. Visitors to the site can subscribe to the weekly digital media file for free. It's on the ‘Corporate & Institutional’ page of wachovia.com.

PAPERLESS INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING - UPS will be the first and only in the shipping industry to give customers a paperless international shipping option. The company plans to launch package return services to 98 countries and territories worldwide. Both the UPS Paperless Invoice and international UPS Returns services will come online in January. UPS Paperless Invoice will allow customers to send small packages internationally without paper commercial invoices.

PROGRAM DESIGNED TO GROW GREEN - In 2007, the Florida Legislature established the Farm to Fuel Grants Program by offering $25 million to provide matching grants for demonstration, commercialization, research and development projects relating to bio-energy. The Florida Department of Agriculture believes that Florida has the ability to grow crops year round and become a leader in renewable energy/bio-energy industry. Florida's Farm to Fuel Grant program is seeking proposals for research, development, demonstration and commercialization projects related to bio-energy. Proposal guidelines and application forms can be found and downloaded at http://www.doacs.state.fl.us. Proposals must be received no later than Friday, October 26.
