POPULATION INFLUENCED BY BIRTHS AND MIGRATION – The latest Volusia population data shows there are more than 508,000 residents. Although the local birth rate has increased each of the last five years (from 4,548 in 2002 to 4,979 in 2006), most of the county’s new residents migrate from other parts of Florida and the country. According to the latest migration data, nearly 30,000 new residents arrived in Volusia County in 2005. This number was offset by just over 22,000 residents who moved elsewhere. The top destination for relocation was the Orlando area where nearly 22 percent of Volusia residents migrated to in 2005. CANADIAN TOURIST INCREASE MAY BE COMING – The currency rates between the Canadian and American dollar recently equalized erasing the premium Canadians used to pay to cross the border for American vacations. As the U.S. dollar has weakened against most foreign currencies, Florida can expect an increase this year from Canada as well as from Europe. This should be good news to Florida’s hotel industry.

HOME SALES CONTINUE DECLINE -- According the Florida Association of Realtors, the number of transactions and the median sale price of single-family, existing homes continued to decline in most Florida metropolitan areas in August. In the Daytona Beach market the median sale price of a single-family home declined five percent -- from $213,400 in August 2006 to $201,900 this August. While this downward trend also exists for condominium sales throughout the state, Daytona Beach is one of the few exceptions. During the past 12 months, the median sale price of area condos increased six percent – from $240,900 in August 2006 to $255,800 this August.
