LARGE OFFICE SPACE NEEDED FOR OPERATIONS CENTER -- The county Department of Economic Development is working with a national business site selector seeking a minimum of 30,000 square feet of open office space. The request is for lease space anywhere in Volusia County. The existing space must be able to accommodate a minimum of 200 parking spaces. P & S PAVING AWARDED COUNTY CONTRACT – The Volusia County Council has awarded a $2.17-million contract to P & S Paving, Daytona Beach, for the continued construction of a perimeter service road at Daytona Beach International Airport. The road is part of a safety/security upgrade and is funded largely by grants from the Federal Aviation Administration (95 percent) and the Florida Department of Transportation (2.5 percent). Work on this phase of the perimeter road is scheduled to begin by the end of the year.

NOMINEES WANTED FOR EXPORTER OF THE YEAR -- The Volusia Manufacturers Association (VMA) is accepting nominees for the 2007 Exporter of the Year Award. The award is presented annually to a Volusia County company that has demonstrated outstanding performance in exporting locally produced products or services. The winner will be honored at the VMA awards banquet October 25 at the Plaza Resort and Spa. The application deadline is September 15. NEW TECHNOLOGIES AVAILABLE TO AREA SCHOOLS -- Progress Energy has announced an innovative program called SolarWise for Schools. This initiative advances the use of renewable energy through solar energy systems known as photovoltaic (PV) systems. These systems are available to schools throughout Progress Energy Florida's 35-county service territory. FLORIDA’S MEDIUM HOUSEHOLD INCOME IMPROVES -- According to the American Community Survey, the median household income in Florida for 2006 was $45,495. This compares to $42,433 in 2005, an increase of $3,062. Florida ranks 28th of the 50 states and the District of Columbia for the highest median household Income. The national median household income of $48,451 is up only 4.8 percent compared to Florida’s increase of 72 percent for the same period.

EDGEWATER MANUFACTURER EXPANDING -- Karavan Trailers, a manufacturer of boat trailers, is expanding its production facility in Edgewater to accommodate the company’s growing domestic and international dealer network. Karavan will construct a 44,000-square-foot manufacturing facility that is scheduled to be complete next June. This expansion also will allow for up to 24,000 square feet of industrial or warehousing space that will be available for lease. WANTED: A GOOD SENSE OF HUMOR -- Have you had a good laugh today at work? Managers with a sense of humor are in demand and most deliver. Eighty-three percent of workers surveyed in a national poll said their managers have a good sense of humor, while 10 percent said their boss does not. Managers who can laugh at themselves or difficult situations often are seen as more approachable and in touch with the challenges their teams face. Levity also can be used to build rapport among staff and ease stressful situations.
