MANUFACTURING SPACE NEEDED -- The county Department of Economic Development is working with a manufacturer that plans to lease or purchase 15,000 - 20,000 square feet of production and distribution space and will be visiting in October to review facility options. The company fabricates accessories for motorcycles. A location on the north end of the county is preferred. All purchase or leasing proposals received will be packaged and forwarded to the company in advance of the visit.

SEMINAR TO FOCUS ON EXPORT CONTROLS -- Not all companies need an export license, but all companies need to know about export licensing. The U.S. Commercial Service and the Bureau of Industry & Security are hosting a two-day seminar September 18 - 19 at the Radisson Resort Orlando to present key information on controls of technology, software, and encryption, including issues regarding foreign nationals and foreign incorporation of U.S software and technology. VENTURE CAPITAL FLOWS IN FLORIDA -- According to the MoneyTree Report by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association, Florida companies received $127.2 million in venture capital during the second quarter of 2007.

SAFETY ADVICE AVAILABLE FREE -- USF Safety Florida works confidentially and free with small businesses to help them comply with OSHA rules. It will visit companies for consultations. Safety Florida does not enforce OSHA rules, but companies get safer workplaces and, theoretically, lower workers' comp premiums as a result. Companies also can qualify for the OSHA’s Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program, which will exempt them from OSHA inspections for several years. FLORIDA MEDICAL MANUFACTURERS TO PRESENT SYMPOSIUM – The 2007 Florida Medical Manufacturers Consortium will host its annual symposium in Lakeland December 4 - 5. FMMC exists to further the interests of the medical manufacturers in Florida. In addition to contributing to the health of the state's citizens, the industry achieves a positive trade balance. FLORIDA OPPORTUNITY FUND CREATED FOR VENTURE CAPITALISTS – The 2007 Florida Capital Formation Act created an opportunity fund with $30 million of initial capital. A new organization will be set up by Enterprise Florida and is expected to begin operations by the end of the year. Venture capitalists can request an investment through the opportunity fund providing the firms agree to match funds with private investment dollars as a minimum investment in Florida. Further, recipients of opportunity fund money must agree to invest that money plus its match into Florida businesses. Eligible venture capital firms must be based in Florida, have fulltime Florida staffing and/or demonstrate a history of prior investment in Florida companies.
