UNITED TO OFFER DAYTONA BEACH-WASHINGTON FLIGHTS BEGINNING IN FEBRUARY -- United Airlines has announced that United Express will begin daily nonstop jet service between Daytona Beach and Washington Dulles International Airport beginning February 8. Washington Dulles International Airport is a major United Airlines hub just outside Washington D.C. that serves an extended region that includes Washington D.C., Baltimore and the northern Virginia area. United Express will offer two daily flights using a 50-passenger regional jet. Tickets are available via United’s worldwide Apollo reservation system. The new service is the result of the joint efforts of the county-operated airport and Volusia’s three tourism advertising authorities.

EDGEWATER BREAKS GROUND ON INDUSTRIAL PARK EXPANSION – The City of Edgewater broke ground Friday as a symbolic beginning for the expansion of the Parktowne Industrial Park. This $1.3-million expansion will provide up to 80 acres of new industrial parcels to support manufacturing and distribution jobs in southeast Volusia County. An economic development grant of $300,000 was provided by the Volusia County Council as part of the county/city strategy for development of new industrial lands. Participating in the groundbreaking were representatives of the city, the Southeast Chamber of Commerce, the County Council and the County’s Division of Economic Development. Once completed, this latest expansion will provide millions of dollars in new capital investments.

IDEAL ALUMINUM CUTS RIBBON TO OPEN DELAND FACILITY – A ribbon cutting ceremony was held last week at the former General Dynamics production facility at the DeLand Municipal Airport for the newest owner, Ideal Aluminum. Hosted by the owners of the company, Walter and Lynn Lehman, the ceremony included a plant tour of the 365,000-square-foot manufacturing operation. Ideal's purchase of the facility was the result of the joint efforts of the City of DeLand, the Volusia County Division of Economic Development which sponsored Industrial Revenue Bond financing, the DeLand Chamber of Commerce, and Bank of America which purchased the Industrial Revenue Bonds to enable the purchase. Ideal was presented an $11,000 check from Progress Energy's Economic Development Initiative.

SMALL BUSINESS ASSISTANCE FAIR SET – The County Division of Economic Development‘s Minority and Small Business Program will host its fourth Business Fair Tuesday on the campus of Daytona Beach Community College, Building 110. The fair will be from 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. The objective of the fair is to assist individuals who want to start or expand a small business. Participants include the Small Business Development Center, SCORE, the Workforce Board, the Central Florida Community Development Corporation, the City of Daytona Beach and the Halifax Chamber. INTERNATIONAL TRADE OFFICE COMING TO ENTREPRENEURIAL CENTER – An office of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Foreign and Commercial Service will be relocating to the county’s Entrepreneurial Center in October. The office will be staffed by an International Trade Specialist who will assist local companies in identifying opportunities to sell their locally-produced products and services overseas. This initiative is part of the County Division of Economic Development’s Business Assistance Program which already has generated more than $5 million in new exporting sales for local companies through its cooperative program with the U.S. Department of Commerce. MARINA ELEMENT OF MANATEE PLAN APPROVED -- The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, in cooperation with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, has approved Phase II of the Manatee Protection Plan for Volusia County. This satisfies the state's requirement that Volusia County has a fully approved plan. This element of the manatee plan regulates the location of new commercial boat slips, primarily along the Halifax River.
