DeLand
Crossings, a major manufacturing and distribution park being created
by Volusia County at Interstate 4 and S.R. 44 east of DeLand, is
under construction and headed for completion later this year.
Members of the
Volusia County Council were joined by DeLand officials April 6 for
the official groundbreaking at the park. The 43-acre industrial site
is designed to accommodate 300,000 square feet of industrial and
distribution space capable of supporting as many as 300
high-skilled, high-waged workers, according to County Economic
Development Director Rick Michael.
“This park
will stimulate job growth,” said County Chair Frank Bruno. “We need
more ready-to-go industrial sites throughout the county. We have
plenty of job leads, but not enough places to put new or expanding
companies.”
Of the six
parcels in DeLand Crossings, three already have been sold, returning
rural, County-owned property to the tax roll. Two companies – BBK
Performance and NSI Intellitec – have committed to relocating to
DeLand Crossings. These two firms are expected to provide up to 120 jobs.
BBK
Performance, which paid $420,000 for its parcel, is a
California-based automotive aftermarket parts manufacturer. It plans a
60,000-square-foot plant. NSI Intellitec is a specialty vehicle
components manufacturer that paid $860,720 for its land and plans a facility
that will contain 60,000 square feet or more of production space.
The county
will have invested about $6.1 million in DeLand Crossings when it is
complete and has secured grant funding to help with specific elements
of the project. For example, the Volusia County Department of
Economic Development, which conceived and coordinates the project,
was awarded a $460,000 transportation grant from the state, a
$1.5-million grant from the United States Department of Housing and
Urban Development, and a $504,000 water and sewer grant from the
United States Economic Development Administration. These funds act
as a catalyst to the completion of DeLand Crossings which is
expected to attract more than $30 Million in private capital
investments for new construction, equipment and machinery.
