Once looking elsewhere, Ocean Design now in its new Daytona Beach manufacturing plant

After several years of planning, Ocean Design Inc. has moved its headquarters and manufacturing operations to a new home in Daytona Beach. The newly constructed state-of-the-art manufacturing facility was built by T.G. Glass & Associates, Ormond Beach, and contains 100,000 square feet of office and production space.

Ocean Design’s new facility is on Williamson Boulevard just south of Mason Avenue where it will be home to more than 200 area workers. Since 2002, the company has been seeking a new location to consolidate its operations. Sites in Texas and throughout central Florida were considered.

In 2004, the Daytona Beach site on Williamson Boulevard was chosen following a series of competitive site reviews. Lead by developer Joseph Fisher of Resource Property Rights Inc., Summerland Key, the new Ocean Design facility was built on land formerly owned by the Consolidated Tomoka Land Development Company that now is part of the Gateway Business Park South.

The Volusia County Department of Economic Development coordinated more than $614,000 in funding for road improvement upgrades on Williamson Boulevard and the construction of Cairns Way to support the company’s required needs.

“Retaining Ocean Design here in Volusia County with its highly-skilled workforce was important to the County Council and the hundreds of families that would have been impacted if the company was to have left our area,” said Volusia County Economic Development Director Rick Michael . “The public support in the company’s future was a good investment.”

Additional business incentives in the form of future real estate tax abatements were approved by the City Commission of Daytona Beach in exchange for the project’s overall capital investment of more than $12 million in construction and capital equipment.

Ocean Design is a world leader in the design and manufacturing of high pressure couplers and connectors used in deep sea environments by the oil and communications industries. The company was founded by James Cairns of Ormond Beach who around 1990 began the company in Holly Hill as a small business with fewer than five employees. Today the company employs more than 200 workers in its Daytona Beach facility and in offices in Houston and Scotland.

Prior to the company’s move to Daytona Beach, the firm was in multiple industrial facilities in the Ormond Beach Airport Industrial Park.
